ECI's Roadside Attractions:
A 3D, navigatable, multiuser-world!

In 1998, ECI-Cofounder Kit Galloway created "ECI's Roadside Attractions," an online 3-D world where many people could visit and appear as 3D characters (Avatars). Visitors could gather in groups and attend special events, or move/walk/fly around this gigantic theme park to see, ride, interact with, or be captured by tons of unusual and bizarre exhibits. ECI's Roadside Attractions is Kit's tribute to all the two-headed cows, UFO crash sites, and other oddities that once populated Route 66 and the lost roads of America. One of it's compelling features is the "Avatar Stage," where 3D caricatures representing participants from anywhere in the world can appear live "On Stage," and perform to an international audience - also comprised of avatars visitors. This is not a totally static 3-D world - objects are animated, things move, vibrate, flicker, change colors, and the visitors avatar can be tossed around on a dance floor, captured by space aliens, visit several art galleries, crash through long strings of fun-house images, or even watch TV in the "Dinosaur Lounge."

Kit built it, which proves it must not only be fun, but easy to do (anyone can do it!!!). He first built the 3-D site for the on-line Avatar '98 conference. ECI's "in-world" after-the-conference-party was a big hit, and the augmentation of the java-based webcasting of live video & sound effortlessly appeared in the HTML slide-out window built into the Active Worlds browser -- it worked great!!!

ECI's Roadside Attractions was showcased at SIGGRAPHS 99's WED-3D-ROUNDUP!
It is also used by university instructors to demonstrate creative applications of ActiveWorld's technology.

ECI's Roadside Attractions requires downloading a special browser from activeworlds.com (PC only). It's located within Alpha World: 0N 4077W (Coordinates mean: zero North, 4077 West) After installing the ActiveWorld browser, launch it, when entering Alpha World at "ground zero," enter the coordinates for Electronic Cafe in the "Teleport" pull-down menu (0N 4077W) and you'll arrive. (THIS IS NOT A VRML-BASED WORLD)
